How Healthy Is Your Relationship?
Like it or not, there may come a time where we are unsure if our relationship is healthy for us or not. It’s easy to think that ‘love is blind’ particularly during the first blush of a relationship (aka the Honeymoon stage), but what happens when the blinkers fall off?
How do you know that the person who tells you that they love you and are ‘the one’ are being truthful or not?
How do you know whether you are displaying behaviours that may be unhealthy for your partner?
People can spend years or decades or even their whole lives being in an unhealthy relationship and either don’t recognize it as being unhealthy or are too frightened to leave. Life is too important to settle, especially with your primary relationships.
We want to be in the perfect relationship with the perfect partner. However, that’s a fantasy world because it exist as there is no one on the planet who is perfect. We all have flaws. But how do you know if your relationship is healthy or unhealthy?
Here are five signs that you may be in an unhealthy relationship:
1. You have to hide your true feelings
If you’re not able to be yourself with your partner and have to wear a mask to hide your true feelings, it can be a sign that you may be in an unhealthy relationship. No one should have to put on an act and be someone they’re not, just to be in a relationship. You deserve to be yourself and to be loved for you. You are good enough. If your partner doesn’t allow you to express your true thoughts and feelings, particularly when this person should be a safe haven from the rest of the world, then who can you be yourself with? Any sort of insults or shaming you should not be tolerated and are red flags for an unhealthy relationship.
2. Your past together is unresolved
Do you fight fair? Or do you or your partner bring up every little thing that has happened in the past? Throwing things in your partner’s face about past hurts and issues can seriously harm a relationship. Rehashing the same old arguments over and over again is not healthy for two adults in a relationship.
3. Anger is expressed towards you
A little anger is okay sometimes, after all we all have our buttons that can set us off. But, any ongoing anger or frequent over-the-top arguments may be a sign that you are in an unhealthy relationship. It’s normal to sometimes get angry and clear the air, but healthy relationships do not have any place for any sort of violence or rage expressed by its partners. If you have to censor yourself or tip-toe around your partner, then you should definitely see that as a red flag.
4. You experience frequent fear
Normal, healthy adults do not live in fear with their relationships. Any sort of fear where you are scared of your partner or are fearful of being in the same room with them is a definite sign that you are in an unhealthy relationship and need to take appropriate steps.
5. You have no friends
If you are not able to spend time with your friends (or have lost all of your friends) because of the jealousy or controlling of your partner, there are trust issues associated with the relationship. Healthy adults are able to spend time away from each other with their own friends and are happy to have new experiences and things to talk about when they are in their partner’s company. This also relates to not being able to spend time with your family. Any filter on your time may mean that your partner is too controlling and doesn’t trust you. This is a definite red flag for an unhealthy relationship. Everyone should be able to spend time away from their partner with their friends and family.
When any of these signs appear in your relationship, it would be prudent of you to consider whether you are in an unhealthy relationship or not. Once you know the trouble signs, you can take action to repair your relationship or end it.
Life is too short and precious to spend it with someone who doesn’t love you for yourself. Your self-esteem and sense of self can be damaged in the long-term. Additionally, it’s very important to spot the trouble signs before escalation of any of these factors occurs.
Never forget that love isn’t supposed to hurt.
